5 Ways to Improve Employee Morale Within the Workplace
Break down the numbers and you’ll find that you and your staff probably spend more time at work than anywhere else. Fazoli’s says, why not make that time well spent and enjoyable?
Creating a workplace bursting with great morale not only makes work more fun, but it also makes employees more productive as well. Here’s what we suggest to help you get the ball rolling:
1. Praise the little things.
According to a new survey, the number one reason employees leave their job is because they do not feel appreciated by their manager. That being said, the next time you hold a staff meeting, acknowledge an employee who stayed late one night, delivered superior guest service, or showed outstanding leadership skills. Even just sending an email or handwritten note to an employee acknowledging their hard work can positively affect how they work throughout the rest of the day.
2. Ask for feedback.
Another key factor that causes employee dissatisfaction is the feeling that their ideas go unheard. Make sure employees know they can personally or anonymously share their thoughts on any issues, as well as any new ideas they may have to better serve your guests. Establishing an open door policy between employees and higher management from the very beginning has proven to be beneficial for all - and profitable for the business itself.
3. Mandate employee breaks.
If you’ve ever visited a foodservice establishment, you know how fast-paced and hectic things can be during the daily dinner rush. While we don’t suggest letting your staff take a stroll during your busiest hour, it’s important to set aside break times for everyone to keep them energized and refreshed throughout their shift.
4. Encourage friendly competition.
Remember those gold stars back in grade school? Well, believe it or not, you’ll never grow out of wanting one! Encourage competition among staff members to help increase productivity and foster employee growth. Putting a reward system in place is the perfect way to encourage your kitchen and front of house crew alike to put their best foot forward. Hold employee contests such as: highest sales for the night, guest service king/queen, fastest food runner, etc. Then, proudly display the winners in the back of the house for all employees to see.
5. Invite guests to share experiences.
Praise from higher-ups isn’t the only type of recognition that can boost employee morale. After all, it’s the opinion of the guests that really matters, especially in the foodservice industry. As a manager, make sure you take the time out to visit your guests during their meal and ask for their honest feedback on the service. You’d be surprised how many people are just bursting at the seams to praise others for a job well done! Collect those experiences and share them at your next staff meeting.
